How to Create a QR Code for a Website Link (Step by Step)

Learn how to create a QR code for a website link in four steps: paste the URL, style the code, download a PNG or SVG, and test the scan before you print.

A website QR code is the simplest QR code there is: the address you want people to open is stored in the pattern itself, so a phone camera reads it and offers to open the link. No app, no install, and no explanation needed for the person scanning it. This guide walks through how to create a QR code for a website link and, just as important, how to make sure it still scans after it has been printed.

What goes inside a website QR code

The code holds a URL encoded as text. That is the entire trick. Because the URL lives in the pattern, a static QR code points straight at your page with nothing in between — there is no shortener to break and no dashboard to keep paying for. The trade-off is equally simple: if the URL changes, you generate a new code.

What the code containsWhat happens on scanCan you change it later?
Full URL, e.g. https://example.com/menuThe phone browser opens the pageNo — create a new code
URL with UTM tagsThe page opens with campaign trackingNo — attach tags before generating
Short URLThe shortener redirects to the destinationYes — edit the redirect, not the code

Create a website link QR code in four steps

  1. Open the generator and choose the Link / URL type.
  2. Paste the full address, for example https://example.com/pricing. If you leave out https://, the generator adds it for you.
  3. Style the code: pick a dark code color on a light background, set a quiet zone of at least four modules, and add a centered logo only if it stays small.
  4. Download a PNG at the size you need, or an SVG if the code goes to a printer, then scan it with two different phones before release.

What decides whether a printed link code works

  • Contrast: dark modules on a light background. Light grey on white is the most common failure.
  • Quiet zone: leave a margin of at least four modules. Never crop the code flush to the edge of a design.
  • Physical size: at least 2 × 2 cm (0.8 in) for close-range scanning, much larger for posters and signage.
  • Test scans: check one iPhone and one Android device under the worst lighting the code will live in.
  • No glossy finish: reflections on laminated prints are a frequent reason a code will not read.

Static or dynamic: which link QR code do you need?

A static code stores the URL directly and is free to generate and reprint forever. A dynamic code stores a short redirect instead, which lets you change the destination and count scans, usually on a paid plan. For print that will not change — menus, packaging, business cards, signage — static is the sturdier choice. Reach for dynamic when a campaign needs to be re-pointed after it has already been printed.

How do I create a QR code for a website link for free?

Use any generator that does not watermark the download or require an account. Paste the URL, choose PNG or SVG, and download. The generator on this site does exactly that, with no sign-up and no scan limit, so the code keeps working for as long as the page it points to does.

Why does my link QR code open the wrong page?

Almost always the URL itself: a typo, a missing path, a trailing space, or a test domain that never went live. Scan the code and read the address the phone offers to open before you print a few hundred of them.

Where to place the code

  • A short line of text above the code telling people what it does — “Scan for the menu”.
  • Enough clear space around the code, not just the quiet zone but a few millimeters of empty background.
  • On print, align it to the artwork rather than rotating it; phones cope with angles, but people hesitate.

Once the code is tested on two phones and the destination page loads quickly on mobile, you are done. The rest is distribution.
