Free QR Generator: Create a QR Code Without Paying or Signing Up

A free QR generator should give you a clean code with no watermark, no expiry, and no scan limit. Here is what you get, how to customise it, and how to avoid codes that stop working.

Search for a free QR generator and you will find hundreds of them, most of which hand back a code with a watermark, an expiry date, or a scan counter that quietly stops working once a trial lapses. This page covers what a free QR generator should actually give you and how to get a clean, permanent code out of one in under a minute.

QR generator, QR code generator — same tool, same job

People search both phrases for the same thing: a page where you type or paste content and get a scannable square image back. There is no meaningful difference between a “QR generator” and a “QR code generator”, so pick on output quality and terms of use, not the wording.

What “free” should mean

  • No watermark on the downloaded file.
  • No account, e-mail confirmation, or trial countdown before you can download.
  • No expiry: a static code you download today should scan in five years.
  • No scan limit, because a static code has no server counting anything.
  • No redirect service in the middle that can be switched off or repriced.
  • Both PNG and SVG exports, not just a screenshot-friendly image.

Style the code before you download it

Free does not have to mean a plain black square. The settings worth touching are the ones that keep the code scannable while still matching whatever it sits next to.

  • Code and background colors: dark on light for the code itself. If you invert it, test the scan on both iOS and Android.
  • Gradient fills: fine for large prints and screens; keep the contrast high at both ends of the gradient.
  • Logo: a small centered mark is safe. Big logos cover modules, so raise the error-correction level to compensate.
  • Size: choose the pixel size you actually need — 1024 px covers most web and social use, larger for print.
  • Quiet zone: four modules is the standard margin and should not be trimmed away by a design tool.

PNG or SVG for a free download?

Take PNG for screens, slides, and social posts. Take SVG for anything going to a printer, a cutting machine, or a designer's layout — it stays sharp at any size and stays a vector file in the artwork. Both formats are free here, so download the one that fits the destination rather than resizing a PNG later.

Is a free QR code really free forever?

For a static code, yes — the data is in the pattern, so nobody can switch it off. Codes tied to a redirect service are different: you are paying for the redirect, whether that is now or later, and a free plan that ends takes the redirect with it.

Can I use a free QR code for commercial work?

Codes you generate here are yours to print, embed, or sell as part of a design. Test the final artwork before a print run, especially if a logo or a gradient is involved.

Five-minute workflow

  1. Pick the content type and enter the details.
  2. Adjust colors, size, and quiet zone; add a logo only if you have a compact one.
  3. Check the contrast warning and fix anything it highlights.
  4. Download PNG for digital use or SVG for print.
  5. Scan the downloaded file with two phones before using it anywhere real.
